The Tibetan Terrier is one of the oldest and most spiritually revered companion breeds in the world — an ancient Tibetan dog whose history in the high-altitude valleys and monasteries of Tibet stretches back over 2,000 years. Despite its name, the Tibetan Terrier is not a true terrier and was never used for going to ground — the name was applied by Western veterinarians in the early 20th century who noted a superficial resemblance to European terrier breeds. In Tibet, the breed was known as the Tsang Apso — "shaggy or bearded dog from the Tsang province" — and was considered a sacred good-luck charm, kept by Buddhist monks and Tibetan families as a treasured companion and talisman. The breed was never sold — only given as gifts to honored guests and allies, which is why it remained virtually unknown outside Tibet for centuries. The Tibetan Terrier is said to have originated in the "Lost Valley" of Tibet, a remote and hidden community that was cut off from the outside world for centuries following a devastating earthquake, and the dogs that lived there were considered sacred protectors of the valley. The breed's most remarkable physical feature is its large, flat, round snowshoe-like feet — broad and heavily furnished with hair between the toes — which provide exceptional traction on snow, ice, and rocky Himalayan terrain. The long, flowing double coat comes in virtually every color and combination except liver and chocolate. The Tibetan Terrier was recognized by the AKC in 1973.
